  • Meaning of the Octofoil

The OCTOFOIL is a device that dates back to the 15th Century when it was customary for each son to have an individual mark of distinction. Under the rules of heraldry there are eight foils or positions. Heraldic rules gave the OCTOFOIL to the ninth son, a device symbolic of his being surrounded by eight brothers.

The 9th Infantry Division insignia is a red and blue octofoil; a design of eight petals with a white center. Red and blue designate colors of an infantry division headquarters flag; white is for the numbers used in divisional flags. The circular background is olive drab.

The subdued variant consists of olive drab and black for less visibility to be worn on field uniforms.

IMPORTANT - History Channel Information Request
AnnouncementsThey are looking for information and responses to this by June 15th 2008 if at all possible! If you need help getting a hold of them, please feel free to contact me (tcrass(A-T)octofoil.org) and I'll do what I can to help you.

    Greetings,

Some 18 months ago we contacted the 9th Infantry Division Association with some research questions regarding the role of the 9th ID in the campaign in Northern Europe in 1944/45. The Association was very helpful, and we heard from several veterans who were interested in sharing their stories with us. Unfortunately, we were unable to interview them given that we were in a strictly research stage. However, we are now producing a series for The History Channel which will follow units that served under General George S. Patton in North Africa, Sicily, and Northwest Europe. I would be happy to discuss this project with you, if you are interested in contacting me. I can be reached by phone or email (see below).

Our company, Flight 33 Productions, has produced numerous programs for The History Channel, including "Shootout!", "The Universe", and the recent series "Battle 360", which followed the crew of USS Enterprise throughout the Pacific War. As in the case of "Battle 360", veteran interviews will be an important element to this series.

For our North Africa episodes, we are looking for veterans who may have participated in the following action:

  • -Landed with General Harmon at Safi, Morocco during Operation Torch
  • -Can describe the intensity of the French resistance
  • -On day-two at Safi, witnessed the Sherman tank level a house full of snipers on hill overlooking blue beach

  • -Landed with Patton at Fedala
  • -Can describe the confusion on the beach (jumbled pile of supplies, stuck vehicles, stuck landing craft, etc.)
  • -Observed Patton attempt to bring order out of the chaos

  • -Landed with General Truscott at Port Lyaute
  • -Witnessed the tank battle that took place on the Lyaute-Rabat road on the morning of Nov. 9th
  • -Took part in the attack on the Fort, the Kasbah

  • -Witnessed, or took part in, the cutting of the steel cable blocking the mouth of the Sebou River

  • -Witnessed the USS Dallas charge up the river to deliver commandos to seize the air field

  • -Took part in any combat at all at any of the three landing sites

We would also like to hear from, or contact veterans who served in the invasion of Sicily as well, who may have served with the 39th Infantry Regiment.

    Respectfully,

    Sam Dolan
    Producer

Registration Bug Fix & E-mail Issues
SecurityThere was a small bug with registration where the security graphic was not displaying correctly allowing various spam accounts to register. This has been resolved. As a result, account settings will be relaxed to allow e-mail activations for now and possibly in the future back to being activated immediately.

Several people have complained about not being able to receive activation e-mails from the site for a little while now. I've been working hard to find out the cause of this problem and get it resolved. As it turns out I have "finally" found the cause and it's due to ISP block lists at a couple of key hubs on the net. I'm in the process of getting this taken care of right away and expect only another day or two of this situation continuing while they get the removals taken care of.

    Peter J. Cusack
InformationAnonymous writes "My father, Peter J. Cusack, a WWII veteran from Boston with the 9th Infantry Division has passed away in Spring Hill Florida. He was always very active in the reunions. I don't know if this is the place to put this.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure this was a good place to put this information, there's bound to be many more people who will also appreciate the communication. ~Torry"

    Registration Changes
SecurityUnfortunately, our favorite spammer types have found a way to register accounts on the site allowing them to post various amounts of spam in the forums. What they've posted has been taken care of and we're looking into exactly how they were able to register like this (unless they did it manually of course).

So, in the mean time, site registration will require admin approval before it allows new accounts to be able to post on the site. I will make a point of checking these types of requests on a regular basis. This will be removed once an acceptably secure work-around is found to the situation.

However, going forward the site will 'also' require the use of a valid e-mail address which it 'will' send an e-mail to in order to validate your account on registration. This will prevent the registration of bogus accounts to the site. If you have problems using this, please e-mail tcrass(at)octofoil.org for assistance. Thank you!
