Memorial Weekend Site Update Featured

As you can see, the site has had some changes on the front side.  It has been a major challenge coming up with a site layout that had the needed functionality and coloring without a ton of crap to go along with it.  Unfortunately, even with the thousands of site layouts available for Joomla, outside of making a custom one, there's very few that are even usable.  I think this one is a good start, hopefully some day I'll either have time to design a custom one, or perhaps someone will be willing to help design one.  I still have quite a long ways to go with it but at least it's a start since I wanted to have something up and operational by Memorial Day at the latest.

With any bit of luck today, discussion boards and the wiki will be available by the time I have to head out of town for the next two days.  The discussion boards will be the primary user-to-user communication tool on the site just like they were on the old site.  Given the amount of use they'd been getting before the outage they have certainly been a value to the site and they are a priority to get back online.  In addition, I felt that we may benefit from the use of a wiki, a place where pages of information can be stored, viewed and updated by everyone (the updates are approved of course so we don't get a ton of spam), I don't know if this will be useful for us or not so we'll try it for a while and see if it's something that captures interest.

Web links, a photo gallery and the actual document system for organization files, newsletters and historical documents will all take some time to get back up and running.  The biggest challenge (but an absolutely necessary one) with the document system is the need to utilize access control systems so that any sensitive information doesn't fall into the wrong hands, such as addresses and phone numbers for instance.  In addition, the intent is to 'fully' and 'seamlessly' integrate that system with the rest of the site so that way we don't have to worry about username and password problems.  Overall this should make the site a lot easier to use and to navigate once complete.

We truly hope that this new site and direction will bring ease of use to the full features many have come to enjoy about www.octofoil.org.  If you have comments or thoughts about the site, please feel free to e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
