A Tribute to All Who Served

Written by Torry Crass

Below is a poem written by Frank Montoya that I saw today and thought the its message and Frank's efforts in creating such a wonderful piece of poetry were exactly on par for this Veteran's Day 2010.  Thank you Frank for sharing such a wonderful piece of writing.  So here it is for you to enjoy as well, republished with permission.

A TRIBUTE TO ALL WHO SERVED

We stand here today to honor all who served.
To salute and to pay homage to one and all.
To those who left family, hearth and home
And proudly went to fight at their country’s call.

To those we sent to The Western Front
To the muddy trenches of World War I.
They suffered bullets and bombs and poison gas,
But they stayed “Over There” till the job was done.

To those who fearlessly fought in World War II
When our country called them up once more.
They served from Alaska to Asia to Europe and Africa.
They fought in the air, on the sea and on foreign shore.

To those we sent at the UN’s call,
When North Korea sought to take the upper hand.
That conflict extended to three long years,
In that strange and cold, relentless land.

To those that we summoned once again,
To take up arms, to take a doubtful stand
They waged an unpopular and thankless war,
As they tried to bring freedom to South Vietnam.

To those that we sent to the Persian Gulf,
Along with UN forces to free Kuwait.
And who fought in Somalia, Grenada and Panama,
In Kosovo and Bosnia, in the Balkan States.

To those who have been deployed time and time again,
Sent to battle terrorists in many a foreign land.
To those that have served and are serving yet again, today
In the mountains of Afghanistan and on Iraqi desert sand.

Let us honor those Veterans that are with us here today,
Our gallant heroes, standing among us, proud and tall;
A most heartfelt honor to the POW’s, to the MIA’s
And to those valiant souls that we sent forth... to fall.

Site Updates & Menu Changes

Written by Torry Crass

In order to better organize the website and, hopefully, make it easier to add features and content as well, we will be updating the menus at the top of the page this weekend.  This setup will involve changes that provide a main-menu name followed by sub-sections that deal with different things under those sections.  If you have any comments about these upcoming changes, please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Some of these sections will not be active immediately, but will hopefully become active as there is time to further develop and add to the site.

New Domains and Updates

Written by Torry Crass

As you can see, the site has been moving forward albeit a bit slowly.  Hopefully we can get some community participation with creation and additions to the Wiki section of the site.  This section has been added to be a place to get and add information regarding the 9th Infantry Division.  If you have info to add, please do so!  In addition we've added two domain names as aliases to the octofoil.org site.  Please click on read more  below for details...

Memorial Weekend Site Update

Written by Torry Crass

As you can see, the site has had some changes on the front side.  It has been a major challenge coming up with a site layout that had the needed functionality and coloring without a ton of crap to go along with it.  Unfortunately, even with the thousands of site layouts available for Joomla, outside of making a custom one, there's very few that are even usable.  I think this one is a good start, hopefully some day I'll either have time to design a custom one, or perhaps someone will be willing to help design one.  I still have quite a long ways to go with it but at least it's a start since I wanted to have something up and operational by Memorial Day at the latest.

Addendum

Written by Torry Crass

Just a quick update.  We've made progress on a number of fronts.  First, the costs associated with the attempted recovery will not be as bad as initially anticipated.

The site is now hosted back in the data center where it belongs.  Our initial setup was deemed more than adequate before, it obviously was not.  So, the site is now replicated between two separate servers and load balanced (along with off-site backups) which means even if one server bursts into flame the site will remain online and the additional server completely intact.

Octofoil Update

Written by Torry Crass

As you can see, this is not the site that we had before.  Unfortunately, the server that was hosting the site crashed completely beyond repair.  The drives that contain the site and files have been sent off to a recovery facility but that facility has not been successful in recovering any data after several weeks.  At this point, the cost of recovery has already exceeded my ability to cover it and I don't have an official bill yet.
